Liverpool Legends show the true power of the LFC Foundation at Anfield

A day at Anfield once again proved that Liverpool Football Club is about far more than just what happens on the pitch.

With over £1.1 million raised from the latest Legends clash against Borussia Dortmund - taking the total beyond £10 million - the impact of these matches continues to grow year on year, and the voices of those involved say everything about why.

“This is bigger than football” – legends on the LFC Foundation

Speaking post match, Ryan Babel admitted he was taken aback by the scale of support:

“It’s obviously important for the Foundation, but for me it was more how impressive the community of Liverpool. I’ve been involved in similar initiatives before where the stadiums weren’t sold out because it wasn’t the first team. But here, it felt like the first team was playing — a full stadium, lively fans — it was very special.”

That sentiment was echoed by Jerzy Dudek, who highlighted the emotional connection:

“It’s very important for all of us. Every moment back at Anfield is special with the Red family. And if we can support the local community as well, that makes it even better. The fact the stadium was full again is amazing — it shows how much people care.”

For Martin Skrtel, the purpose goes beyond nostalgia:

“It’s always nice to come back for a good cause. To help people is really important, and that’s what this football club is about. The connection between the fans, players and the Foundation is unbelievable.”

“No other club does this” – what makes Liverpool different

Few summed it up better than Sammy Lee:

“It’s not just for the Foundation, it’s for the whole city. Legends games don’t sell out everywhere — this shows what this club and this community mean. It’s fantastic.”

Igor Biscan was even more direct:

“The stadium being full again is unbelievable. I’m not sure this happens anywhere else. It shows how much people respect what the club and the Foundation are doing.”

Even opposition voices felt it, with Jan Koller reflecting:

“It’s a very special match — Liverpool is a big club with incredible supporters. That’s what makes occasions like this so special.”

Foundation impact backed by record-breaking numbers

The significance of the occasion is backed up by hard facts.

  • £1.1 million raised from this match alone

  • Over £10 million raised across all Legends games at Anfield

  • More than 60,000 supporters in attendance

All proceeds go directly to the LFC Foundation, funding programmes that help people into work, education and better health.

CEO Matt Parish explained:

“These matches are always special, but reaching over £10 million raised is incredible. Every ticket bought helps fund our work, from employability programmes to community support. The impact of that support will be felt across Liverpool and beyond.”

More than a game

For players like Ragnar Klavan, seeing the work first-hand is what matters most:

“Of course it’s amazing to play at Anfield again, but that’s not the main reason. Seeing the impact the Foundation has on the community — that’s what really matters.”

And as Jay Spearing put it:

“We’re trying to help local families, local kids — putting food on tables. The Foundation is doing incredible things, and we all want to help however we can.”

The bigger picture

With ambitions to support 500,000 people per season by 2030, and already reaching more than 145,000 people last year, the scale of the Foundation’s work continues to grow.

But as this Legends match showed, the real strength lies in something less measurable — the bond between club, players and supporters.

Or, in the words of Fabio Aurelio:

“We come back because of the work the Foundation does. The fans understand that — that’s why they support it. And that’s what makes it so special.”
